Probably the biggest of its kind in Poland, the shop has seen better days. Jola and Wiesiek, the idiosyncratic operators, are each trying in their own way to cope with the crisis and revive business. 　　The closing of the mines and the resulting unemployment in Bytom left behind all those who were unable to adapt to the new age. In the huge hall, they put increasingly absurd and worthless objects on the counter. The once lucrative trade in jewellery, electric devices and furniture has dwindled and however hard the employees work, the till stays empty. The wiring is unsound, nerves are raw and the tone between them gets rougher. Before they know it, the small business has turned into a kind of counselling centre: drying tears, ladling out soup and giving away goods instead of selling them. Jola in her voluminous fur coat always has an open ear and a warm blanket ready. Wiesiek devises one marketing scheme after the other. But will it be enough to save their business? 1986年，根据柯云路同名小说改编的电视连续剧《新星》，以一个县为背景，浓缩了1982年中国农村大刀阔斧改革的社会生活。它以其振聋发聩的主题和对生活的贴近，赢得了前所未有的反响和收视率。主演周里京因此走红，曾获“新时期十年电影最佳男演员奖”，现为北京电影学院教授。 　　你问任何一个50岁以上的中国人，没一个不知道《新星》的。当年这部电视剧播出以后，引起的轰动绝不亚于今天的刘翔跨栏夺冠、杨利伟冲出地球！有数不清的电视观众给周里京写信，有的请他去当县委书记，有的是向他诉冤情。那时候，这部电视剧还被当成了整党教材，教育干部怎么去当好官、当清官。当然，现在关于这个话题有些争论，比如有人说，李向南不是包青天，他本身也有一些问题存在，但是，什么官是好官？是清官？现在，像李向南这样“一心为民”的好官不是太多了，而是太少太少了！ 　　说万人空巷看《新星》，一点都不过分。这部电视剧播出以后，把柯云路给捧红了。不仅小说另出了单行本，还有很多人排队买过期的登载过小说《新星》的杂志《当代》。但对周里京来说，我认为是给他带来了麻烦，他成了众矢之的，一举一动都被过分关注，很累，我相信刘翔和杨利伟都有这个体会，但周里京当时的压力更大。1980年代的演员，跟现在不同，他们拍电视剧不是冲钱去的，而是希望能拍到好戏。周里京拍《新星》大约拍了3个多月，挣了七八百块钱吧。假如不是周里京，而是换个人来演，这部电视剧会怎么样？不好说，他的个人魅力不需要我多说什么。[口述/北京电影学院李副教授（周里京同事） 采访/董薇] 　　《新星》在当时的确受到很多人追捧。特别是关注农村、关心知识分子、关注改革的人爱看。可以说，这部电视剧给一些关心局势的人指出了方向。很多人是从《新星》当中知道，原来县委书记是这样工作的。基层干部怎么推进改革，新旧两种制度之间可能会起什么样的冲突？这些都可以通过看《新星》获得理解和共鸣。而且，那时电视机才刚刚普及，电视剧的选择也非常有限，可以说，观众是别无选择地“选择”了追捧《新星》。此外，还有一个重要的原因，李向南的扮演者周里京很帅，1980年代不是流行高仓健的那种“冷”吗？周里京也有这种气质，他非常吸引人。
